about

In keeping with an informal tradition that such databases are named for women in art, Georgetown University's Art, Music & Theater image database Angelica is named in honor of Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), Swiss artist and a founder of the Royal Academy in London. Begun in 1984, this text and image database has been migrated three times in its technological history. The current upgrade resides on a University server and is written in Access. Angelica (as of January 2006) contains more than 115,000 text records and 15,000 digital images.

Angelica provides the Georgetown University community with textual descriptions and digital surrogates of thousands of art history slides in the art history collection of the department of Art, Music and Theater. As the Angelica initiative grows university-wide, it will include other humanities-based image collections found in the University community. For example, images in the Classics department collection have been added to the database for all to access and utilize.

Angelica is a valuable pedagogical tool for faculty and a useful study tool for students of art, art history and the other humanities. It serves the academic community as a resource for research, comparative studies and classroom teaching and student presentations. The database is for the exclusive educational use only of faculty and students at Georgetown University. A NetID is required for access. Materials, text and image, are copyrighted.
